RELEASE
JOHN
CAGE. THE SILENCE OF THE MUSIC
by Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta
MART, in
world premiere, recalls the extraordinary
personage of John Cage with a unique homage to the Master, which
will begin in March the 7th 2003, curated by Lucrezia De Domizio
Durini and co-ordinated by Giovanna Nicoletti.
John Cage is one of the most emblematic protagonists of the musical
evolution in the 20th Century, born in Los Angeles in September
the 5th 1912 and disappeared in August the 12th 1992.
Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta, architect, photographer, writer
and music composer, from 1985 up to his disappearance, had a constant
human relationship and an intense work with the American Master
and, even in the present, remains collaborating in the most diverse
countries of the world through his extraordinary performances
with the choreographer Merce Cunningham, who worked for a long
time with John Cage.
The event, new production of MART, has as its aim the reconstruction
and the illumination the spiritual meaning of the meeting of the
two men, John Cage and Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta, who, in
the different generations, are linked in a common destiny that
leads the operation of the language in the highest cosmological
sphere of the musical field and of the human sensitivity. A work,
that of the young composer, from what it is possible to apprehend
a type of collection of cultural reflections, a kind of magical
box with profound information.
At 15:00
International Symposium
Participants:
Daniel Charles, writer, philosopher of the music and specialist
on John Cage's works; Denis Curti, critic of photography; Antonio
d'Avossa, art critic; Massimo Donà, philosopher; Saverio
Monno, social scientist. The lecturers, in their diverse interventions,
will deal with the work and aesthetics of John Cage's life in
the ambit of the whole event.
At 17:30
Lucrezia
De Domizio Durini, specialist on Joseph Beuys' work and thought,
will present the book John Cage, The Silence of the Music, by
Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta, and three compact discs also by
Pimenta: 18/6 The Silence of the Music, Music for John and Music
for Merce Cunningham, specially published for the occasion.
The book is a rare historical document, the first and unique of
its kind published in Italy, by Silvana Publishers, in Milan.
The edition is a rare testimony of a unique spiritual relationship
oriented to a message of cultural intercommunication. A singular
epistolary correspondence between the artist and the master, a
rare history of images of John Cage's loft and a profound introspective
essay by the famous philosopher of the music, John Cage's friend,
Daniel Charles, turn precious the edition - a unique publishing
not only in the Italian editorial production, but also in the
international context.
At 19:00
Vernissage of the Exhibition
At the
MART's first floor, a singular setting refers to the odours of
his culinary art... the Nature... the famous mushrooms... cactus...
the sounds of the water that runs in the metallic tubes... the
black cat... the Zen philosophy... the sounds of the streets...
and the silence... the silence creates the sound and the noise
to my music (J.C.) It is John Cage's loft, visible and invisible
theatre in the corner of the 18th Street and the 6th Avenue in
New York City. It is as to penetrate into the visceral space of
the creativity, into the reign of silence, in the heart of his
music, in his amniotic camera... The visitant, crossing the space
of the exhibition, will find himself facing to precious, rare
and unique images of the loft that Pimenta's magic eyes focused.
13 Musical Graphical Scores, unique works with a creative signal
of a rare and sublime spiritual and ethical share, follow them.
The Video room completes the whole Exhibition. Cage's words cross
themselves with the dance of the great friend, Cunningham, while
Bob Raushemberg's voice is mixed with nocturnal discussions by
Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, David Tudor and Schoemberg, Anastasi,
Dove Bradshaw, Laura Kuhn and more... The loud background of the
compact disc 18/6 - The Silence of the Music, sounding the loft
placed in the corner of the 18th Street and the 6th Avenue, in
New York City, invades the whole space.
At 20:00
Music for John Cage, digital and electroacoustic concert by Emanuel
Dimas de Melo Pimenta.
In the
great wall facing to the semicircular stairs, penetrating the
central part of the Museum, Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta, projecting
esoteric images, explodes his musical creativity to the highest
level of the human sensitivity. The concert is made by magisterial
and historical compositions where the audition touches the strings
of the mind and travel beyond time and space. In a way closed
and far, beyond all frontiers. A message of peace and social rebirth
for all human beings on the Earth.
