Metanoia is an opera created by Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta as part of the official European celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War (1914-1918). The world premiere took place at the Batalha Monastery, a 14th century Gothic building in Portugal, in 2018 - occupying the entire monastery.
The Batalha Monastery was built to celebrate the victory of Portugal's last war against the Spanish attack and as a landmark for the end of the wars with that country. In fact, over the next six hundred years, Spain and Portugal never went to war again.
Metanoia is an ancient Greek expression meaning the coming to consciousness.
Pimenta's opera was created as a celebration of the human as the primary condition for the "end of the idea of war". It unfolds through the history of art, music and philosophy, especially over the last five hundred years.
The film, which has its world premiere here at the event Conflitti, il valore della diversità, il disastro dell'intolleranza, in the context of the meetings of the Amici della Spirale in Milan, is made about the second movement of the opera - and is a non-verbal reflection on art and music since the 14th century. This movement was characterized by thousands of images projected onto the walls of the great monastery.
